Important Update: Changes to Google Services for Students Effective February 28, 2025

Dear Parents and Guardians,

To comply with state regulations and protect student data, New York State schools are required to make changes to Google Services for students, effective February 28, 2025. These updates align with Education Law 2D and guidance from Google and the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

How Will This Impact Students?
Students will continue to have access to Google Core Services (Classroom, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Calendar and Forms) for collaboration and learning. However, some Google Additional Services will be restricted to ensure compliance with privacy laws. These include YouTube, Translate, Earth, and Photos.

Please note that while teachers will still have access to YouTube and can embed videos into classroom tools for instructional use, students will be restricted from accessing YouTube.com, its playlists and its search features.

Why Are These Changes Taking Place?
These changes are necessary due to Google’s refusal to comply with NYS Student Data Privacy Laws. These updates help safeguard student data, ensuring compliance with NYS Education Law 2D and strengthening security in response to evolving privacy concerns.

Thank you for your understanding and support in maintaining a safe learning environment.
